Mental Performance Coaching for Athletes

In addition to being an RCC I am also accredited as a Mental Game Performance Coach. I have had the opportunity to work directly with the Langley Rivermen Jr A Hockey Club for many years providing support to their players with regards to mental performance and in some instances more traditional mental health related matters. I have also had the opportunity to work with a variety of athletes: nationally ranked swimmers, nationally ranked softball players, WHL and AHL hockey players, semi-professional soccer players, and NCAA lacrosse players.

My role as a Mental Performance Coach has been to develop strategies pertaining to the mental performance side of sports to allow athletes to grow and thrive in what can be an extremely stressful and mentally challenging time in their lives. Each athlete is treated as an individual and their strategies and plans are unique to them as individuals.

There really is no cookie-cutter approach to this area as each athlete struggles in different areas of their sport. The ultimate objective is to help these young athletes overcome these challenges by developing better strategies to ensure they can be successful in life and their sport.

Virtual or In-Person Sessions

Since the COVID Pandemic remote sessions became an integral part of peoples’ mental health care as in-person therapy sessions were lost to the pandemic. Since then remote sessions have become an integral part of the service provided for people.

Remote sessions can occur either over the phone or through Zoom if you prefer face-to-face. The feedback received about remote sessions has been very positive as people can have their sessions in the privacy and comfort of their own space. Remote sessions also allow for less impact on the individuals as they do not need to travel to a session, leave work early for a session, or get child care while they attend a session. You can get the same level of care and understanding remotely as you could through in-person sessions.

A lot of people really value the in-person experience and so for these people, in-person sessions can be arranged. Neither format is right or wrong and both can be accommodated. In some cases, some clients implement a hybrid version incorporating both methods into their mental health maintenance.
